Each year, United Nations Global Compact gather group of 10 people for SDG Pioneers. These people consists of individuals from accross the world who implement UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in their business and inspire others to support this campaign. Hundreds of nominations were received from diverse regions of the world exemplifying how a business can be a force for good in addressing the challenges we face as a global society, before it finally chosen 10 finalists through a rigorous commitee.
After being announced by Lise Kingo, the CEO and Executive Director of Global Compact, 10 SDG Pioneers 2018 officially recognized on last Monday (24/9), including Dr. (H.C.) Martha Tilaar. She becomes the first Indonesian who receive this award, as SDG Pioneer for Advancing Sustainability Through Community Engagement to be exact. For this event, she flew to UN Headquarter in New York with her Vice Chairwoman, Wulan Tilaar.
Through Martha Tilaar Group’s cosmetic and traditional herb company, PT Martina Berto Tbk, Dr. (H.C) Martha Tlaar has empowerd women through her business. She motivated and trained them to gain their skills, hence prevented them from being an object of human trafficing that often disguised as job opportunity provider. This effort has changed many of these women’s life and her family.
She also consistant in introducing Indonesia traditional her to international market through her products , built a green field called Kampoeng Djamoe Organik –Organic Herbal Village, as her effort to preservethe medical and cosmetic herbs organically, and set up Martha Tilaar Training Center (MTIC) for young women from low-income family so they could be professional spa therapist.
“I believe that we shouldn’t ignore the power of women. To this day, I still see women with great ability haven’t got a chance to fully realize their potentials. To accelerate Global Goals, we need to have more women to be involved in every aspect of life".
