Coelogyne marthae, Orchid of Indonesia: On Two Centuries Postage Stamp Edition (Part 1)

Bogor Botanical Garden as the oldes botanical garden in South East Asia will entering its two centuries of age this week, May 18, 2017, to be exact. In this momentun, Indonesia Science Institute (LIPI) through Plants Conservation Center of Botanical Garden in collaboration with PT Pos Indonesia and Indonesia Ministry of Informatic and Communication will launch special postage stamp series right in the 200th years of Bogor Botanical Garden anniversary day.

This stamp series will be so special because it’s the most stamp series that will be printed ever by PT Post Indonesia. “The previous most stamp series that we ever print in Peruri is only four series, but especially for this Bogor Botanical Garden two centuries celebration, we will print 34 plants series,” Munawar from PT Pos Indonesia explains. This plants series that chosen by PT Pos Indonesia and LIPI is orchid. “All those 34 series of orchid will respresent 34 province in Indonesia,” he says.��

Orchid is one of Indonesia plants which now endangered. Based on Didik Widyatmoko as Head of Plants Conservation Center LIPI Botanical Garden, conservation status of most orchids in Bogor Botanical Garden are rare. So many various of the orchids found in Indonesia forests, which now also endangered. The fact are also mentioned bt General Secretary of Indonesia Orchid Association, Erni. “The habitat of� Indonesia orchid like Java Moon Orchid is now hard to find, ironically, some orchids are easier to find abroad like Singapore,” says Erni.

With that condition, postage stamp series of Two centuries of Bogor Botanical Garden will become real form of LIPI’s effort in conservation, by documenting orchids in Indoneisa. On 34 series of orchid stamp, Coelogyne marthae become one of orchids that memorialized.
